Chapter 63: Now—Chaos Snake from the Dark Sea

“Wah! Wah! Wah!”

“Not yet! Let’s pick up the pace!”

“Eeeeeep!”

A satisfying, rhythmic click-clacking filled the air as a light ping-pong ball zipped back and forth across the table. We continued to strike it with our paddles, sending the ball careening from one side to the other. It was a lively game of hot springs ping-pong.

After that eavesdropping incident came to light, the other members of the hero’s party (and Kuon) had received a thorough grilling from Cain. But following that, we regrouped like nothing had happened, and despite the visible lumps on their heads, we all began enjoying the entertainment facilities the hotel had to offer.

My one-on-one time with Cain had ended, but I was genuinely happy to spend time with everyone... Besides, I’d already had a hunch that they were lurking somewhere.

Right now, my opponent was Rachel. We continued batting the ping-pong ball back and forth, both clad in yukata provided by the hotel.

“I’m not even close to done! This isn’t nearly my full power!”

“Wah! Waaaaaaaaah?!”

This game was not a contest of skill. We were both complete beginners, and our paddles were worn and tattered. Neither one of us could do anything as advanced as putting a calculated spin on the ball. All I could do was return the ball when it came towards me.

But it was fast—the ball was moving way too fast.

Her brute strength and reflexes—honed to smash through the demon army— had pushed the limits of what the ball could handle. This was hot spring ping-pong match beyond the realm of mankind. I was just barely fending off her vicious assault, while she still had energy to spare.

The ping-pong ball itself had been magically reinforced. Otherwise, the sheer force of our hits would have shattered it into dust. It moved so fast, it was like there were multiple balls in play at once. I would lose track of it if I lost focus for even an instant. My brain felt like it was frying from the sheer concentration and intuition required to pinpoint the ball’s location, while my muscles screamed out in pain as I moved at inhuman speeds and swung the racket.

What is...this? Is this training? Rather than ping-pong, it’s become a completely different sport... No, not even a sport at this point...just...something...

“Guh...ah!”

Finally, I misjudged one of Rachel’s blazing shots, lobbing the ball high into the air.

“This is my chance!”

Just like the ball, she too shot up high, aligning herself perfectly before unleashing a devastating smash. With the resulting boom, I could have sworn an explosion spell had gone off. The ball ricocheted off my side of the field, then shot forward and hit me square in the jaw before I could react.

“Gwaaaaaaaaah!”

My body was sent flying through the air. A mere three-gram ball had delivered an impossibly heavy impact.

And there I lay, collapsed on the floor, jaw throbbing, mind hazy, vision spinning. My body refused to listen to me, and it didn’t seem like I’d be getting up anytime soon.
